How Scientific Links Combine to Thrive Academic Researchin Universities: A Social Network Analysis Approachon the Generation of Knowledge
The generation of knowledge enables thedevelopment of adaptive capacities required by organiza-tions that aspire to survive in competitive context; aca-demic institutions are not oblivious to this. In fact, thegeneration and dissemination of scientific knowledge areingrained within the DNA of university institutions,assuming knowledge creation as primary function to breedscientific publications. In this sense, the organizationalstudy of social network structures turns to be a robust toolfor the analysis and comprehension of formal or informalcollaborative relationships engaged in the core of anysocial entity. Through the co-authorship analysis in scien-tific publications and the utilization ofsocial networkanalysis(SNA) approach, the present paper examines thestructure of influences that reigns in a particular university,identifying those authors who have been capable to gen-erate, foster, and boost a relational network and the entirelyintellectual capital of the institution. The conclusionsunveil the prevalence of a non-cohesive, uncompleted, andinequitable social network, in which the academic categoryor status neither determines nor assures a key positionwithin the network.
