No image available for this title
This exploratory study examines the sociode-mographic factors associated with extracurricular activity(ECA) participation of primary school students in Penang(Malaysia). The dichotomous choice Logit model isapplied on survey data of 459 respondents. Results indicatethat household affluence, ethnicity, education level ofparent, and schooling level of the child are significantfactors associated with ECA participation likelihoods.Several observations are noted. First, measures to introducefree/subsidized non-academic classes to all school childrenshould be considered to prevent social inequalities withregards to ECA favouring wealthier households. Second, there exists a divergence of ECA selections even amongstethnic groups, with Chinese families favouring music andarts, while Malay households are more inclined towardsreligious studies. Third, education policymakers should becognizant of the advantages of ECA beyond the academicrealm when designing future educational curriculum. Last, contemporary childhood upbringing methods in Malaysiafavour equal opportunities in ECA participation irrespec-tive of gender
