A Clamour for More Technology in Universities: What Doesan Investigation into the ICT Use and Learning Stylesof Malaysian ‘Digital Natives’ Tell Us?

Prensky (On the Horizon 9:1–6,2001a,b) andother proponents of the concept of ‘digital natives’ claimthat the current generation of undergraduates possessesadvanced knowledge and skills in Information Communi-cation Technologies and is highly motivated to learn in thismode. In contrast, there are studies that revealed a variationin the levels of students’ access and a greater tendency touse it for social rather than academic purposes. This sug-gests that the concept of ‘digital natives’ need furtherinvestigation. Studies undertaken on digital natives inMalaysia have generally shown that students are receptiveto technology use in learning English; however, no studyhas clearly delineated the characteristics of Malaysian‘digital natives’. Thus, the present study intends to fill thisgap in knowledge by exploring Malaysian ‘digital natives’usage of technologies in terms of extent of use, perceivedusefulness and perceived ease of use and the influence oflearning styles on this usage by juxtaposing the Technol-ogy Acceptance Model with Willing’s learning stylesconstruct. A questionnaire survey was used to collect datawhich were analysed quantitatively. The findings supportthose of other studies undertaken in other countries. Thestudents only used common technological tools such asemails and Facebook and generally had positive percep-tions of the usefulness and ease of use of technology in thelearning of English, regardless of learning styles. Althoughstudents expressed interest in using more technology, theywere using less technology than anticipated in their learn-ing of English and showed a preference for teacher-centred learning.
