Acoustophoresis is a powerful yet gentle techniquefor manipulating cells and particles that has quickly earned aplace in the lab-on-a-chip toolkit. However, traditional con-struction techniques for acoustophoretic resonators have typ-ically required prohibitively expensive and laborious process-ing methods. Here, we propose a highly cost-effective andcleanroom-free construction technique for transversalacoustophoretic resonators. Channels with two differentwidths of 750 and 300μm were constructed using a simpleglass and polyimide sandwiching technique. Half and fullwavelength resonators were then established using 1 and5 MHz ultrasound respectively and polystyrene beads weresuccessfully manipulated in both types of resonators. Thisconstruction technique was then utilized to demonstrate a bi-furcation and trifurcation microchannel with 600μmwidthsand 2.5 MHz ultrasound. Our approach addresses some of thekey drawbacks of acoustophoretic devices by drastically sim-plifying the fabrication and prototyping of transversal resona-tors and will assist in expanding this technology from labora-tory benches and into the broader maarket.
