No image available for this title
This article provides an in-depth analysis of Leonard Cohen’s song So Long, Marianne as an outstanding example of the hybrid genre of ›songpoetry‹. The analysis operates on three different levels: (1) on the level of musical and textual structure; (2) on the level of authorship (or what Tomaševskij calls the ›biographical legend‹ of the artist); and (3) on a cultural-sociological level These considerations combine to create a sketch of the early Leonard Cohen as an artist who is concerned not only about his art, but also about his self-positioning in the field of contemporary songpoetry This is specially evident in Cohen’s self-presentation which can be
understood as offering an intentional alternative to that of Bob Dylan Cohen’s conduct of warmth‹ is an accentuated contrast to Dylan’s ›pathos of distance
