Demotivation Experienced by English as Foreign Language (EFL)Learners in the Lao PDR

Given the long establishment of English as aninternational lingua franca, the motivation of Englishlearning among the English as foreign language (EFL)learners is still a challenging issue faced by EFL teachers insome contexts. In this study, a survey was conducted with158 EFL learners in a university in the southern Lao PDRto explore factors that negatively impacted on their moti-vation to learn English. The results of factor analysisrevealed that they reported five dimensions of demotivationin EFL learning, namely, difficulty to achieve linguisticaccuracy, negative attitudes toward English, curriculumissues, lack of supports and resources, and foreign languageanxiety. The findings of this study offered the directions tocultivate the motivation of EFL learning among the EFLlearners in the Lao PDR. In addition, the findings alsopointed to the possibility of viewing motivation anddemotivation as the two ends of a continuum of L2 moti-vation; rather than describing these two notions usingnoncongruent frameworks as currently practiced by bothL2 motivation and demotivation researchers
