No image available for this title
Graduates with strong foreign language skills(FLS) have an advantage when applying for a job. Un-derpinned by the theory of planned behavior, this researchaimed at examining influences on the intentions of tourismmajors in a Korean university to acquire FLS. A first sur-vey was conducted with 256 students who had completedtwo or more semesters in the program. A second surveywas administered with 134 students who had newly enteredthe program. Overall, the attitudes and subjective normswere found to be significant contributors, while behavioralcontrol appeared to be less influential in regard to thestudents’ intentions to acquire FLS. Different interventionsto influence the students’ intentions to acquire FLS shouldbe considered based on the students’ enrollment periods.Effects can be larger on students within certain enrollmentperiods if interventions are targeted at normative beliefs, while effects may be larger on students who are new to theprogram if interventions highlight control beliefs.
