Development of Physics Attitude Scale (PAS): An Instrumentto Measure Students’ Attitudes Toward Physics

No image available for this title
The present study is focused on the detaileddescription of Physics Attitude Scale (PAS) to measurestudents’ attitudes toward physics. The development of thisnew instrument involved extensive interviews with boththe experts as well as the students. This was followed byexpert reviews and pilot testing of the instrument. The dulyrevised draft was used to collect responses from 624 stu-dents, aged 15–18 from Government Model Senior Sec-ondary Schools, India. The factor analysis carried out onthe resulting data revealed that the final form of the PhysicsAttitude Scale consists of five dimensions: Enthusiasmtoward Physics, Physics Learning, Physics as a Process,Physics Teacher, and Physics as a Future Vocation. Thecontent validity of the scale has been confirmed by theclose agreement of experts on the statements. The relia-bility analysis showed that the scale consists of internallyconsistent items for each dimension. These findingsdemonstrate that the Physics Attitude Scale (PAS) pos-sesses robust psychometric properties. It has been furtherfound that a positive correlations exist between (a) enthu-siasm toward physics and physics learning; (b) enthusiasmtoward physics and physics as a process; (c) enthusiasmtoward physics and physics as a future vocation; and(d) physics teacher and physics learning. Thus, the newlydeveloped PAS can be used as an effective instrument byresearchers and teachers to assess students’ attitudestoward physics
