No image available for this title
The purpose of this study was to investigate thedepartment identification, professional identification, andattitude toward agriculture of agriculture students. As thescope of agricultural higher education has been readjustedto focus on a system of content-related innovations insteadof primary production, it is also an aim of the study toprobe how students see themselves in agriculture. A total of632 survey questionnaires were obtained from 349 soph-omores and 283 seniors, equaling 25 % of the total amountof students (N=2,554) enrolled in a college of agricul-ture. The results revealed the backgrounds of the agricul-ture students as well as their responses on all scales, andthe responses of different groups of students were com-pared. Differences in department identification and pro-fessional identification and student attitudes towardagriculture were found among students of different ages, class levels, and study areas. Admission pathway andagriculture-related experience showed no significant dif-ferences in three study variables. Advanced SEM analysisshowed that department identification significantly affectsprofessional identification, and the effect of departmentidentification on attitudes toward agriculture is mediated byprofessional identification. Consequently, the departmentidentification of agriculture college students affects theirprofessional identification and attitudes toward agriculture. To change college students’ attitudes toward agriculture, aneffective intervention could be to focus on social identity orgroup cohesion
