No image available for this title
This article focuses on school curriculum docu-ments. It specifically investigates teachers’ perceptions ofcurriculum in the Solomon Islands context. Using a ques-tionnaire as a means of gathering data, a sample of 35teachers were asked to provide their perceptions about thecurriculum documents for three subject areas, using criteriadeveloped by Print (Curriculum development and design,Allen & Unwin, Sydney,1993)—interest, authenticity, appropriateness, organization and balance, and technicalquality. The analysis of the data suggests that the local cur-riculum documents for Social Studies have been received byteachers much more positively compared with the foreigncurriculum documents in English and Mathematics. Thisimplies that in both curriculum development work and thedelivery of education, it may be preferable to contextualizethe curriculum documents to suit the local context. The studyhas implications for curriculum development in other PacificIsland countries that were colonies of metropolitan powersand even in other small island developing states worldwide
