No image available for this title
Previous researchers have found that neighbourhood environmental factors play a significant role in
promoting an active lifestyle among the elderly. Few studies in Malaysia have addressed this relationship. This
article aims to explore the relationship between young elderly active lifestyle and the built environment. Through
an extensive literature review, the article identified the neighbourhood environmental factors that pertain to
active lifestyle. The factors identified complied with New Urbanism design principles. One hundred residents
from Taman Tun Dr Ismail neighbourhood in Kuala Lumpur were surveyed using a semi-structured
questionnaire. Descriptive, correlation and multiple regression were used for the data analysis. The results
showed that New Urbanism design principles promoted active lifestyles among the young elderly. Social interaction,
walking, accessibility and permeability were among the factors that showed correlation with the young
elderly active lifestyle. Maintenance and safety factors did not differ.
