No image available for this title
The purpose of this study was to investigate thevalue of introducing digital storytelling (DST) into secondlanguage (L2) narrative practice, by examining the char-acteristics of L2 learners’ narrative when multimodality isadded. To this end, the present study examined pairs ofpersonal narrative scripts produced by 50 undergraduate L2learners in DST, along with their self-created videos forDST presentation, as well as their narrative scripts devel-oped in traditional (exclusively linguistic) modes. Theparticipants’ narrative scripts and videos were analyzedbased on the ‘good story’ framework, which consists ofimportant dimensions to consider in the narrative genre. The findings demonstrate that L2 students’ narrativesbecome better stories when they are practiced in DST,particularly in terms of expressing one’s feeling, showingawareness of the audience, and adding more details to thestory. Also, the availability of multiple modes of expres-sion was found to expand their narrative topics and elicittheir stories and visions more powerfully. The authorsconclude that an understanding of the unique features ofDST enables teachers to use this new approach forenhancing L2 narrative skills in their learners
