Theatre performances are unthinkable without spectators. At the same
time however rehearsals are an intimate and from public access protected process
because a too early orientation at effects for an audience interferes with the creative
process within rehearsals. Based on more than 30 hours of video recordings I show
on a selection of extracts how theatre producers refer verbally and bodily to audience
within the rehearsal process how this is accomplished interactionally and what this
tells us about the ways theatre professionals construct their audiences in the context
of rehearsals.
