Examining Factors in Cross-Cultural Competence Developmentin Taiwan College Students

No image available for this title
The recent large-scale movement of peopleacross the globe has triggered many cross-cultural oppor-tunities that were quite rare in the past, but now occuralmost every day. However, these cross-cultural opportu-nities have also introduced a variety of cultural tensionsand visible exclusionary practices, which are of seriousconcern. The summation of these opportunities and phe-nomena has resulted in a greater demand for cross-culturalcompetence (CCC) of individuals living in a diversifiedglobal community. In Taiwan, within recent years, therehas been a significant influx of international students and ineffect, this increase has gradually transformed the univer-sity campus into a more diversified community. In order topromote cross-cultural exchange and a mutual under-standing between the growing number of internationalstudents and local college students, it is important todevelop their cross-cultural competence early in their col-lege lives. Consequently, this paper details an empiricalstudy on the mediating effects of social factors on thedevelopment of a local college student’s cross-culturalcompetence, including the school climate, family andhome, peers, personal value system, and traditions. Using amodified CCC scale developed by Chen and Ching (2012),a total of 933 valid responses were gathered and analyzed.Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyzeand develop a model of relationships among the socialfactors. Results show that student exposure to a cross-culturally tolerant environment has greatly enhanced theircross-cultural competence. In addition, the SEM resultshave also shown a significant path from student schoolclimate, individual perspective (personal value system andtraditions), and cross-cultural competence. In conclusion,in order for Taiwan college students to become betterequipped with adequate cross-cultural skills, additionalinterventions and opportunities should be encouraged
