Who are They Really? A Review of the Characteristicsof Pre-service ICT Teachers in Turkey

This study examines how pre-service ICTteachers who are equipped with technological, pedagogi-cal, and content knowledge, meet challenges in theirteaching practices. This study aims to portray Turkishelementary ICT teachers’ characteristics regarding theirperceptions about teaching and their competencies. Thedata were collected by administering questionnaires to atotal of 1,568 pre-service teachers. Moreover, 33 pre-ser-vice ICT teachers were interviewed, and 8 pre-serviceclassroom observations were conducted to gain an in-depthunderstanding of the participants. Lesson plans were alsoanalyzed during the data collection process. The resultsshowed that the perceptions of the pre-service ICT teacherswere generally positive about teaching. However, somenegative points were also identified in their perceptions andcompetencies. The results of this study might shed light onwho chooses ICT teaching as a profession, how ICTteachers are educated, and what career paths they follow
