The Role of Optimism, Self-Esteem, Academic Self-Efficacyand Gender in High-Ability Student

Optimism is a positive psychological trait whichmay help individuals to cope with stressful and adverse sit-uations. This study examined the associations of disposi-tional optimism, academic self-efficacy, self-esteem, andgender on high-ability students’ stress perception of aca-demic expectations. 298 high-ability senior high schoolstudents in Singapore participated in this study by complet-ing a self-report questionnaire. Results revealed a significantnegative association between optimism and academic stressperception among students. There were significant variationsamong variables, gender, self-esteem, academic self-effi-cacy and dispositional optimism, in predicting the twodimensions of academic expectations stress among high-ability adolescents. Possible explanations for the results weresuggested and implications of the findings were discussed
