ocial media can benefit English as a foreignlanguage (EFL) learning, but learners need a deliberateapproach to pursue deeper learning. To this end, the aim ofthis study was to design a prewriting activity using amobile-based concept map to assess participants’ writingperformance in different aspects of writing. The designedprewriting activity comprised (1) structuralized privateknowledge, (2) explicit knowledge affordance, and (3)consolidated social activities. To evaluate the effects of theprewriting activity, an EFL prewriting experiment wasconducted. In this experiment, 80 participants in a highschool in Taiwan were evenly assigned to a control orexperimental group. The participants’ writing essays andlearning perceptions were collected, and the analysisresults indicated that (1) a significant difference was foundin the aspects of communicative quality, linguistic accu-racy, and linguistic appropriacy, and (2) the questionnairestatistics aligned with similar findings that the prewritingactivity helped learners’ writing from communicativequality and social collaboration perspective
