Characterization of Mazuj galls of Quercus infectoria tree as green corrosion and scale inhibitor for effective treatment of cooling water systems

No image available for this title
The corrosion and scale inhibition efficiency of Mazuj gall extract in
simulated cooling water has been evaluated. Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical
impedance spectroscopy, gravimetric measurements, and ultraviolet–visible
(UV–Vis) spectroscopy were used to investigate the corrosion inhibition efficiency
and mechanism. Also, static beaker testing and scanning electron microscopy
were applied to evaluate the scale inhibition performance of Mazuj gall extract. It
was observed that 1000 ppm Mazuj gall extract provided promising corrosion inhibition
efficiency of 94.3% and also excellent scale inhibition efficiency of 97.2%.
According to adsorption studies and UV–Vis spectroscopy, the inhibition efficiency
of extract can mostly be attributed to formation of insoluble Fe2+
complexes over
the steel surface obeying the Langmuir isotherm model and behaving as an anodictype
corrosion inhibitor. It is concluded that Mazuj gall extract can be proposed as
an efficient green inhibitor of scale formation and corrosion of mild steel in cooling
water.
