Die Ausnahme des Pop

No image available for this title
The exception is more interesting than the rule«, Carl Schmitt claimed
1922 in his Political Theology. The dictum aims at a definition of political sovereignty,
but might be fruitful for a discussion of aesthetical problems as well after
all. Schmitt continues: »In the exception the power of real life breaks through
the crust of a mechanism that has become torpid by repetition.« This blatantly
vanguard specification states a dialectical process of serialization and singularity,
of the expectable and the exceptional that could be observed in popular cultures as
well. The paper inquires the relations of the serial and the extraordinary in pop
art and pop literature and attempts to enrich fundamental contributions of Moritz
Baßler or Urs Staeheli with assumptions on the exception of pop
