The concepts of the popular and the public are interwoven historically
and systematically. Whatever is popular, has a public. And publics cluster around
such communicative offers which are popular. Although literary studies are dealing
with popular literature, especially with the so-called Popliteratur, research tends to
ignore the question how certain literary works manage to gain a public. The article
discusses the tradition to neglect the empirical public and pleads for a research
agenda, which complements the immanent literary critique with a qualitative study
of what people are doing with literary texts.
