Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT): Influenced CaseResearch of a Philippine Physics Class

No image available for this title
The study critically explored the case of Pan-gasinan learners’ physics learning process using cultureand language-influenced curriculum materials in physics(CLI-CMP). Case research using cultural historical activitytheory (CHAT) designed the study to provide unique ideason how socio-cultural theory, a recent field of study ofPhysics Education Research, works best and contributesthrough a bottom-up approach to the body of knowledge inthis research area. Sampled 48 grade 10 participants andtheir physics teacher, a Pangasinan native, used thedesigned CLI-CMP for 10 weeks to determine how effec-tive the tool is in addressing student misconceptions inphysics. Data gathered from the design and development ofthe CLI-CMP, classroom observations, interviews, andfocus-group-discussions extracted information on how thecustomized curriculum materials provided means ofmeaning making and conceptual change, which mayeventually lead to achieving scientific literacy. The resultsshow that better conceptual understanding observed in thephysics class may be significantly due to the socio-cultur-ally influenced curriculum materials. Further analysis usingCHAT framework (methodical level) determined thecoherence and progressive characteristics of the activitiesin a particular physics unit which matched Engestro ̈m’sexpansive learning cycle and served as a suited tool tomediate the subject to the object and to the goal attainment.Exploration of the learning process using the epistemo-logical level of analysis of CHAT framework provided howthe mediating tool may have addressed the noted studentmisconception emphasizing learning science as participa-tory to the community and socio-culturally influenced
