The Tobias poem by ›Pfaffe Lambrecht‹ displays a distinctive mixture
of persuasive passages and passages that seem to be narrative in character. Due to
this mixture researchers have criticized the work for its lack of vivid narration. This
contribution argues that the design of the piece (which survives only in fragments) is
determined by its specific relationship to the Biblical pre-text: the explicit references
to the pre-text are sometimes foregrounded in such a way that they replace the
direct presentation of the plot. ›Derivative narration‹ is suggested as a name for
such a method, which explicitly draws on another text with its storyworld, but does
not create a storyworld from scratch.
