With regard to the Siegen-Bonn-project Theatre In Discussion, which explores
viewers’ habits of perceiving artworks, I will ask for the character of theatre
audience in itself. Which concept of audience is considered by the project members?
Do they think about an educated middle-class audience or a non-traditional
audience? And what is the nature of these? By means of discourse analysis I will
explore, how two theatre directors of Schauspielhaus Leipzig with very different
opinions about the role of theatre in modern society speak about their audience,
in what linguistic form they argue, how they express their ideas and in this way
construct their audience themselves. From a theoretical point of view I will refer to
the idea of Hoehne, that middle-class theatre of 19th und 20th century was defined
by disciplining the viewers, but not by informalizing.
