Ein Lied als Erinnerungsort

No image available for this title
This interpretation of Te recuerdo Amanda takes the cultural and historical
context of the song into consideration, focusing on its reception. Special attention
will be paid to the life, death and further impact of the singer-songwriter Víctor Jara
(1932–1973). His seemingly simple love song is equally a protest song at a crucial
moment in the history of Chile. Regarding Víctor Jara’s life, his assassination by the
armed forces became a symbol of the terror spread by the military dictatorship in
Chile. Therefore, the song also became iconic of the turning point in Chile’s history,
i.e. September 11th 1973, the day of Pinochet’s military coup. Finally, it works as
a multilayered ›place of memory‹: On one level, there is the remembrance of the
woman addressed in the title – Amanda – who suffers the loss of her lover, as well
as the memory of her beloved Manuel. On another level, the song memorializes the
artist Víctor Jara himself and his atrocious death during the military coup. Moreover,
until today, the song commemorates the thousands of assassinated and disappeared
people during the dictatorship, reclaiming justice.
