Building Technology Competency: an Evidence-Based Approachto Improving Student Technology Skills

A Student Resource Center was created at amedium-sized public comprehensive university in the Mid-West as a solution to lack of technology competency in thestudent body. This Student Resource Center was designed toprovide technology skill training in select technology tools inuse by faculty, staff, and students. The ADDIE model wasused to build a curriculum of technology skill training forthe current student body based on data collected from surveyssent to university alumni, faculty, and students in addition toemployers who hire a large number of university graduates.Participants were asked to identify the technology skills need-ed or learned during the time at the university and technologyskills needed upon entering the work place. Results of thestudy indicated that alumni and students felt they needed ad-ditional technology training and that employers found newhires generally lacking in technology competency
