ers a surprisingly large and diverse range of narrative units. This is accomplished by keeping the individual stories short and moving through them at a dizzying pace. However, the narrative pace varies, with a slower tempo combined with a more descriptive style in some of the more programmatic narratives invite ing the audience to feel their way into the scene in a manner not possible in the more cursory passages. This paper adapts the ›Telling‹ and ›Showing‹ categories
of Percy Lubbock to offer a means of characterizing the phenomenon. By contrast, in some passages the already rapid narrative tempo of the Annolied increases to a point where the allusions are purely referential. By analogy with Lubbock’s terminology, the category ›Reminding‹ is suggested as a characterization of the way this communicates.
