No image available for this title
The main goal of this research is to understandhow young children use mobile technology such assmartphones to traverse different learning contexts andharness a constellation of resources to make sense of theirscience learning in daily lives. We adopted Rogoff’ssociocultural lens of transformation of participation thathelps us understand how students’ science learning expe-riences can interact with their wide array of cognitive, social and cultural resources and be mediated throughpersonal, interpersonal and cultural–institutional forces informal and informal learning spaces. We present an anal-ysis of three contrasting case illustrations of Primary 3(aged 9–10) students in a Singapore ICT-enriched primaryschool, and discuss findings in relation to the virtuous andvicious cycles of learning trajectories. In conclusion, wecontend that mobile technology, which is considered as acultural tool and learning hub, has the potential to elevatelearning, but this potential can only be realized under twoconditions: (a) when learners have created the habit ofmind for utilizing and harnessing cultural, epistemic andsocial resources to foster connections between formal andinformal knowledge; and (b) when the use of mobiletechnology is situated within the broader knowledge basesthat our current formal curriculum recognizes.
