The article summarises the qualitative research on prologues in German Medieval Studies – 48 essays, published between 1955 and 2009, are evaluated regarding their approaches and findings. On this basis, the article concludes thatthe hermeneutic research, looking at single passages or single prologues, should be complemented by a quantitative access to also enable comprehensive findings. It is carried out on the basis of 107 prologues, taken from texts of the 12th to the 15th
century and which are assigned to the genres of heroic epic, fabliaux, and romance. After clarifying the statistical-methodological premises (STTR, log-likelihood-test, part of speech-tagging and lemmatizing), the article discusses analysis results and interpretation of the most frequent content words
