In our article we discuss the methodological relationship of hermeneutical
and quantitative approaches in literary studies in the light of latest developments in
the field of digital humanities. Starting from (1) an evaluation of Franco Moretti’s
term distant reading as a core concept in literary historiography and (2) an analysis
of the historical and conceptual foundation of stylometrics we then focus (3) on
the importance of operationalizing. Following this, we propose (4) a mixed methods
approach in literary studies that theorizes the interface of hermeneutical and
quantitative methods
