Russian twister and the World Anti-Doping Code: time to shun the elitist paradigm of anti-doping regime

No image available for this title
The doping scandal involving Russia, exemplifies that sports is all about winning and not about participation alone. The facts speak for themselves. In 1998 the Festina Scandal led to a worldwide outrage over doping in sports. The sporting world lead by the International Olympic Committee reacted to this scandal by holding a World Conference on Doping in Sp rt on 4th February 1999. The outcome of this conference was the establishment of the World Anti-Doping Code (hereinafter called
WADA) on 10th November 1999. Since then WADA has been the law enforcer on behalf of the sporting world, laying down the framework for investigation, detection and sanction against use of performance enhancing drugs. The WADA Code came into force in the year 2004, and has been revised twice, once in 2009 and then in 2015. The objective has been to fill the gap between the existing versions, as well as to make it more compliant with the accepted norms of human rights. However, the magnitude of the latest doping scandal indicates a deeper malaise within the current anti-doping regime. The article analyses
the present anti-doping regime that is being propagated and sustained by WADA.
