‘‘Bringing Life to Learning’’: A Study of Active Learningin Hospitality Education

Active learning connects students to the real lifesituations they will encounter in their future jobs. In hos-pitality education, active learning implements variouslively, fun activities to introduce practical scenarios stu-dents may experience in their hospitality careers. Thisstudy identifies 18 essential active-learning items of hos-pitality education through a comprehensive literaturereview and in-depth personal and focus group interviewswith 19 hospitality educators and eight hospitality studentsin Asia. This paper discusses the potential benefits of usingactive learning, and its relationship with two major studentengagement themes: ‘‘knowledge seeking’’ and ‘‘skillsenhancement.’
