This paper provides an overview of the rationale for engaging in the
carbon production debate. It then establishes emission rates and measurements
associated with carbon utilisation. The paper provides a useful overview for the
application of Energy Performance Certifi cates (EPCs) related to dwellings and nondwellings.
Furthermore, it explains the application of Display Energy Certifi cates
(DECs) on public buildings. The roles and responsibilities of key personnel are
identifi ed in the EPC and DEC processes, and thus the paper provides a succinct
summary for practicing building surveyors.
